Outdoor learning adventures 🌞

Congratulations to all of our young writers who participated in the Young Author's Conference. Sauk Prairie was represented by 18 students from grades 3-5.
These young authors from Grand Ave, Merrimac and Tower Rock had their writing selected as winning entries. Because of their winning pieces, the students earned participation in the Central Wisconsin Talented and Gifted (CWTAG) Young Author's Conference where they heard from a published author and attended writing workshops. Their work is published in an anthology of winning entries.
The Young Author's Conference, held earlier this year in Westfield, featured writing from students across Central Wisconsin in the areas of poetry, narrative writing, and creative writing.

Field trippin' Sauk Prairie style! The outdoor learning field trip this week ended in a wagon ride for our Tower Rock 2nd grade students. They explored Enge Farms and hiked the property which then lead them to Natural State Bridge Park. They returned from the field trip via the wagon!

Elise P., a junior at Sauk Prairie High School, is helping spread joy at Tower Rock Elementary School through her internship working with 1st graders in Mrs. Anderson's class.
Elise is one of many HS students working in schools throughout the district helping children with social/emotional learning while enhancing academic success.

Love when the public librarians come to do book talks and bring us new books!

Tower Rock 5th graders took a field trip on foot to meet Mani, Cleo, and the artist that created them, Gaby Marván. These large, colorful Alebrijes are a part of the Farm/Art DTour. Students asked great questions and made connections to their own paper mâché project they recently started in art class.

What a great day to plant trees!

It was pretty great to see the eclipse as a whole school.
Thank you to the Eilertson family and the Brickl family for the donated eclipse glasses. What a day!

In the book “Because of the Rabbit” the main character Emma and her brother Owen collected rocks when they traveled and wrote an inspirational phrase or word on it.
After reading the book, Tower Rock students partnered with their buddy classes to create their own inspirational rock messages.

Our school and families have been reading “Because of the Rabbit” by Cynthia Lord. This week we are celebrating literacy with fun activities based on the book and lots of reading!

First and third grade teamed up for an outdoor learning experience. Third graders lead small groups of first graders through different rotations that were taught by third graders. Third graders did an incredible job of being outdoor learning leaders.
The group finished the day with a hike, a scavenger hunt, and journaling.
What a beautiful day!

"Starting the prairie was so much fun, and it helps the earth. I’m so thankful that this project was possible!"
This is a quote from a Tower Rock student published in the Wisconsin DNR's Bumblebee Brigade Year in Review. The Tower Rock prairie was one of the projects highlighted in the DNR publication.
The process of creating the prairie was a remarkable educational project that began when the current Tower Rock 5th graders were in 2nd grade. The Prairie is now an exceptional outdoor learning space that has brought the students and community together and has become a bee habitat attracting the endangered Rusty Patched Bumblebee. This project may have attracted a few students to the field of science as well!

Tower Rock 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders went to see the middle school and high school show choirs! Such a fun experience!

In celebration of #TakeMeOutsideDay, Mrs. Anderson’s 2nd graders and Ms. Hicken’s 5th graders at Tower Rock Elementary teamed up to get creative outdoors! After learning about artist and environmentalist Andy Goldsworthy, these “buddy classes” set off to find “fallen treasures” to fabricate their own nature art. This outdoor adventure culminated with a “Gallery Walk” to view the master pieces made from sticks, leaves, pine needles, nuts, corn stalks, and so much more!

In music class, young learners at Tower Rock read about vibrations, soundwaves, and echos while Miss Frizzle took her students on a field trip to the Haunted Sound Museum! 😱 Then students showed their understanding of the content by using pipe cleaners to make soundwaves that matched loud and quiet sounds! #musiceducation #musicandscience #musicinourschools #togetherwesoar #saukprairieschools #spsdlearns #TowerRockSchool #magicschoolbus

Tower Rock students have unique opportunities for outdoor learning. The area around Tower Rock School is truly an outdoor classroom that offers great hands-on learning.

Picture books inspired third grade students at Tower Rock to be get hands-on experience as architects, scientists and engineers. Students read Iggy Peck Architect, Rosie Revere Engineer, Ada Twist Scientist, and Sofia Valdez Future Prez by Andrea Beaty. They compared and contrasted the themes and character traits found in the book series. Through some community building STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) activities they practiced cooperation, teamwork and self-control. They were architects and built structures out of cups and index cards. They were scientists who tried to create Play-Doh. They were engineers who saved Fred the gummy worm. #togetherwesoar #towerrockschool

First recess for our littlest learners was a hit. #towerrockers #togetherwesoar

Welcome to the 2023-24 School Year, Tower Rock!
